So, you decided to buy a greeting card that's blank inside. You were filled with inspiration in the card shop and decided that you could write something much better than anything the greeting card companies could dream up. You know the person better than anyone else, after all. Surely, you can come up with some amazing sentiment that will bring tears of joy to their eyes and forever cement the friendship that you have forged over the years.
There you sit with pen in hand, ready to craft a personal and heartfelt message, but nothing comes. Nope, nothing. The stark whiteness of the inside of the card glares up at you, daring you to write something. It's not even that there are a million things you want to say and you are having trouble organizing your thoughts. You have got absolutely nothing running around in your head. How can this be? You have genuine feelings for this person; how can you not come up with a single word to write?

Writers are very familiar with the pain and misery of writer's block. Here are a couple of tips to help you through your case of greeting-card writer's block. When the words will not come, don't chase. It's kind of like a misbehaving puppy. You call the puppy, but he doesn't come. You chase the puppy and he runs away. Now you're running down the street after the puppy. Save yourself the workout...stop chasing and walk the other way. Most of the time, the puppy will follow you back. The same is true with words. Walk away. Take a shower. Go find something else to do and put the greeting card out of your mind. You might be surprised at how easily the words will come when you don't have the pen in your hand, trying to force them out.
Now of course, this only works if you have the time to do it. If you are in a situation where you have to send the greeting card out immediately, you will need some drastic measures. Not only do you have writer's block, but now you have anxiety from the stress of a deadline. Try reading some other greeting cards. Usually, what you will find is all the things you don't want to say, and surprisingly, that might lead you to the things you do want to say.
Writer's block is really just anxiety. You are faced with a deadline and you want what you write to be perfect. Relax; think of the person, come up with a memory you have of that person and try to describe the feeling that memory gives you. You can also think of something special about that person, what they like to do, what gives them energy and incites their passion. Give yourself plenty of time.
The next time you purchase another greeting card, perhaps consider one that conveys the feeling you're trying to achieve. Maybe it's as simple as a picture or a cartoon about that person's special interest, enough to let the person know how much they mean to you. Find a relevant card - all you need to confer a special status - and maybe you'll find that words aren't really that necessary, after all.
